Cyanoacrylate Ester Fuming in Humid Climates: Field Protocol
Examiner Vaishnavi Thakre
Infinite Forensics Research Directorate“Optimal chamber humidity, heat bed temperatures, and secondary staining with Rhodamine 6G for non-porous metal and glass evidence.”
Principles of Super Glue Fuming
Cyanoacrylate fuming is the gold-standard method for visualizing latent friction ridge impressions on non-porous surfaces (glass, firearms, glazed ceramics, smooth plastics).
The vaporized ethyl or methyl cyanoacrylate monomer polymerizes upon contacting moisture, sodium chloride, and amino acids in sweat residue, forming a resilient white polycyanoacrylate deposit along the ridge contours.
Critical Environmental Conditions - **Chamber Relative Humidity:** 70% to 80% (strict control prevents background over-development) - **Hot Plate Temperature:** 120°C to 130°C - **Fuming Duration:** 15 to 25 minutes depending on chamber volume
Secondary Dye Staining To enhance visual contrast under forensic light sources (ALS), subsequent staining with **Rhodamine 6G** or **Basic Yellow 40** followed by illumination at 450nm-532nm with orange/yellow barrier filters produces exceptional fluorescence.
