Mastering the Henry Primary Classification System: Step-by-Step

Examiner Vaishnavi Thakre
Infinite Forensics Research Directorate

“How to assign numerical values to paired fingers, calculate numerator and denominator values, and avoid the common arch/tented arch pitfall.”

1. Fundamental Principles of Primary Classification

The Henry Classification System, developed in the late 19th century by Sir Edward Henry, Hem Chandra Bose, and Azizul Haque, remains the structural backbone of manual dactyloscopic record systems.

The primary classification is based entirely on the presence or absence of **whorl patterns** on the ten fingers. Loop and arch patterns are assigned a numerical value of **0**.

Finger Pairing & Coordinate Values The fingers are paired in the following standard order:

1. **Pair 1:** Right Thumb (1) & Right Index (2) — Value: 16
2. **Pair 2:** Right Middle (3) & Right Ring (4) — Value: 8
3. **Pair 3:** Right Little (5) & Left Thumb (6) — Value: 4
4. **Pair 4:** Left Index (7) & Left Middle (8) — Value: 2
5. **Pair 5:** Left Ring (9) & Left Little (10) — Value: 1

Calculation Formula $$\text{Primary Ratio} = \frac{1 + \sum(\text{Even Finger Whorl Values})}{1 + \sum(\text{Odd Finger Whorl Values})}$$

- **Numerator:** Sum of whorl values on fingers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 + 1
- **Denominator:** Sum of whorl values on fingers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 + 1

If all fingers have whorls, the ratio is $\frac{1 + 31}{1 + 31} = \frac{32}{32}$. If no whorls are present anywhere (all loops or arches), the primary classification is $\frac{1}{1}$.

2. Common Examiner Pitfalls

1. **Confusing Tented Arches with Loops:** Tented arches lack a true delta or recurving ridge that enters and exits on the same side. Misinterpreting this can misfile an entire 10-digit card.
2. **Reversing Numerator & Denominator:** Remember: Even fingers are placed in the numerator; odd fingers are placed in the denominator.
3. **Omitting the Arbitrary Constant:** The constant $+1$ in both numerator and denominator ensures no classification begins with $0/0$.
